PSW Media Update Early July
It’s taken some time but the personal support worker industry, clients and specifically home care workers are starting to finally receive some credit & sympathy in the press. Beginning the month of July are three important articles from the Ontario media.
Starting things off is a compressive look at the industry via Toronto Star, highlighting under-funding and the low pay of home care workers. This article includes quotes from many of the big players (unions, red cross, etc) and helps to create a sympathetic tone towards home care workers.
The second notable article comes from the CBC regarding a 21 year-old disabled individual that has ‘aged out’ of the school system. This issue creates a problem for the family, as they may be left scrambling for alternative care methods that they cannot afford.
Finally, the third article via Owen Sound Times asks an interesting question: should their be standards on household conditions? A terrible outcome occurred in Owen Sound, as a 72 year-old man’s home care was skipped out on for a week by home care PSW’s. This in itself is unacceptable. But from there the article dives into the question of household conditions. There are certainly shades of grey in ever story, including this one.
