School Boards from across Ontario offer reasonably priced personal support worker courses. These course typically have 100% of the curriculum devoted to outlined PSW related learning and have the lowest average tuition costs.
These classes vary by location; some are offered on a part-time basis, some full-time and a few school boards even offer weekend only courses.
This mixture of flexibility and low cost make the courses very attractive. However, there are some downsides.
In a nutshell:
School Board courses are an economical and fast way to obtain a PSW Certificate. Typically $1250 - $1500 will pay for a course, books and supplies. Most courses are completed in 8 months.
However, since the barrier to entry is so low—in terms of time & money— the system ‘spits’ out new PSWs at a fast rate.
When viewing resumes, employers will typically select PSWs with Ontario Public College credentials over those with School Board certificates.
This can be overcome by a PSW that works hard, makes networking contacts and that continually upgrades their resume skill set.
All of these factors need to be weighed before making a decision regarding where to take a course. Two other options include:
Ontario Public Colleges
Private Colleges
