Personal Support Worker's get a rare mention in the media

As I'm sure many of your are aware, there is a serious lack of personal support worker coverage in the mainstream media. That's why I found it surprising to see an article in the Toronto Star a few weeks back titled Support allows residents to age in place.

Unfortunately PSW's are downplayed in this article. The story does bring up past funding issues with the Government and senior citizens but again, it casts a somewhat stereotypical light on personal support worker. Here's a quote when discussing the care that is provided by eight PSW's to the buildings 550+ residents;

"The personal support workers aren't doctors or nurses," says Weber, "but that isn't necessary."

Weber (who works at the building) goes on to say that the PSW's on hand preform many of the basic duties that the residents need. Now if this is true (and it probably is) I don't take offense to the comment. But, just once, I would like to see personal support workers cast in a positive glow. Rarely is this profession ever mentioned in the mainstream media and when it is its usually based around funding issues.

I guess this profession will take what it can get. I'd love to see future stories focus on personal support worker's throughout the province and the hard work that they put in day in and day out.
