PSW Article #11: Additional Personal Support Worker Certificates Can Add Value

Additional Personal Support Worker Certificates Can Add Value

It’s not a stretch to say that personal support worker is one of the most secure careers in today’s economic climate. While that’s the case, it could still be considered prudent to make ourselves more attractive to employers by adding new skills, degree’s, and certificates to our resumes during these trying economic times.

Now I’m not suggesting that you should undertake a multiple year degree. There are many certificates that can be earned in a short time-frame that can increase your future earning potential.

If you are currently employed ask your employer if they offer any training programs, tuition support, etc. Also ask them if there are any pay increases for holding a certain type of credential.

If you are currently not employed in the field you can contact local educational centers or even contact someone in an HR position of a prospecitve employer to find out where, when and how much a couple of courses will cost you.

Below is a quick list of frequent credentials that employers look for:

First Aid Certificate

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate

(Usually one of) Health Care Aid Certificate, Home Support Attendant Certificate or Personal Support Worker Certificate

Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate

Nursing Aid Certificate

Certificate of Conduct
